What kind of toothbrush should I use?
To avoid irritating your gum tissue, we recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes. They clean just as well as brushes with firmer bristles, but won’t cause injury to the soft tissues of your mouth. Additionally, find a toothbrush with a smaller head that can more easily brush around your back teeth.
Why is flossing so important?
Daily flossing is the only way to remove plaque and food debris from in between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. We routinely see dental cavities and tooth decay occurring in between the teeth as a lack of flossing. Flossing is also the best way to fight off gum disease.
Do over-the-counter whitening products work?
All toothpaste will remove surface stains from your teeth, and some whitening toothpaste can offer additional stain removal. However, whitening toothpaste is unable to whiten your teeth by bleaching them. Many whitening products on the market contain hydrogen peroxide, which can remove surface stains on your teeth, but there is currently nothing you can purchase over the counter that can come close to giving you the results of professional whitening products.
What causes teeth to become stained or turn yellow?
Wine, tea, tobacco use, coffee, and even some berries can stain your tooth’s enamel. Additionally, if you have a buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth, it can cause your teeth to appear stained or yellowed. Another reason for yellowing teeth is the thinning of enamel, which comes with age.
How do I know if I have gum disease?
Gum disease can be painless in the early stages, meaning you can have it and not even be aware of it. This is why it’s so important to make and keep regular dental appointments. Your hygienist and Dr. Esmaili will know what to keep an eye out for and can catch gum disease in the early stages before it becomes serious. A few symptoms for you to watch for include reddened and bleeding gums, consistent bad breath, receding gums, or loosening teeth.
