Thank you for choosing Peakview Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. Some mild soreness or sensitivity is normal after root canal treatment and should gradually improve over the next few days.
Protect Your Tooth
- Do not chew on the treated tooth until the numbness has completely worn off.
- If a temporary filling or crown was placed, avoid chewing hard, sticky, or chewy foods on that tooth.
- Whenever possible, chew on the opposite side until your permanent crown or final restoration has been placed.
- A root canal-treated tooth can be more susceptible to fracture, so it is important to have the tooth permanently restored as recommended by your dental team.
Discomfort & Sensitivity
- Mild tenderness when biting or chewing is common for several days following treatment.
- You may also notice some soreness in the gum around the treated tooth.
- Use prescribed pain medication as directed by your dental team.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage of any medication.
Medications
Take all medications exactly as directed by your dentist.
If an antibiotic has been prescribed, take it as directed and complete the prescribed course unless your dental team instructs you otherwise.
Oral Hygiene
- Continue brushing and flossing normally, but be gentle around the treated tooth if the area is tender.
- Keeping the area clean is important for proper healing.
- If a temporary restoration is present, take care when flossing around the tooth. Follow any specific instructions provided by your dental team.
Temporary Filling or Crown
If a temporary filling or temporary crown was placed:
- Avoid sticky or chewy foods that could pull it loose.
- Do not pick at or attempt to remove the temporary restoration.
- Contact our office if the temporary restoration becomes loose or falls out.
Follow-Up Appointment
Your root canal treatment may require a permanent crown or other final restoration. Please keep your follow-up appointment so the tooth can be properly restored and protected.
